Re-thinker

Changing your mind? Clearing can help.

It’s completely normal to have second thoughts about your course or university – lots of students do. If you’ve realised your original choice isn’t quite right for you, Clearing gives you the chance to explore new options.

Whether you’re drawn to a different subject or a new location, Clearing is your opportunity to make a change and apply for something that feels like a better fit. It’s all about finding the course and university or college that match your goals – and it’s not too late to do that.

“When I started second-guessing my course choice in July, I felt stuck. I thought changing my mind this late would mean missing out completely. But after speaking to the university, they told me I could still switch – through Clearing. It was such a relief to know I didn’t have to wait a whole year. Clearing helped me get onto a course I was genuinely excited about – and I’m so glad I made the call.”

Thinking of Changing Your Mind?

Thinking about self-releasing into UCAS Clearing?
Take time to consider your options carefully. Once you give up your firm place, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to get it back – so it’s important to have a solid back-up plan in place first.

Start by doing your research:

  • Look into alternative courses and universities that interest you.

  • Contact them directly to check course availability and ask any questions you have.

  • Try to secure a verbal offer from your preferred university or college before taking any action.

  • Be prepared to explain your reasons for switching and show why you’re a good match for the new course.

If you already have a confirmed place but want to change to a different course, university or college, you’ll need to be released into Clearing first. There are two ways to do this:

Option 1: Ask to be released

Contact your current university and request to be released into Clearing.

Option 2: Self-release (with caution!)

You can release yourself through your UCAS Hub by clicking the ‘Decline my place’ button.

⚠️ Important:

Only use self-release after you’ve spoken to another university or college and have a verbal offer lined up.
Once you self-release, you can’t go back to your original place.

Double-check everything before making your decision – and make sure you feel confident in your next steps.
