Care Leavers: What support we offer, Calderdale College

The University Centre at Calderdale College is committed to supporting those from a care background who wish to study for a degree.

We understand that care experienced students may encounter some unique challenges in the transition into Higher Education and may have concerns about studying both on a personal and financial level. We will support care experienced students interested in applying to study here as well as care leavers who are already studying with us.

Student Advisers

One of our dedicated Student Advisers can meet you before the academic year to discuss any concerns or worries that you may have and answer any questions. You will also be able to access ongoing support throughout your studies from dedicated Progress Coaches and our Learner Services team.

Student Advisers can work with any other support workers you have outside of college to help you throughout your college experience.

If you would like to know more to know please email our Advice and Guidance team or call 01422 399 367.

We work closely with Calderdale’s Virtual School and have run a number of events for care experienced students and their carers.

Financial Support

Please visit our finance and funding webpage to see if you are eligible for a bursary.

The University Centre Bursary Scheme is open to all Level 4 students, including care leavers. Click here for more information on how to access the Scheme visit.

Care Leaver Covenant

We recognise the challenges that young people face when they leave the care system and begin to live independently. We support the key principles of the Care Leaver’s Covenant that all parts of society have a responsibility to help care leavers so that they can make a successful transition to adulthood.

The Learner Services department has good links with external agencies such as Housing and they can provide advice and guidance if needed.

Visit here for further information about our Covenant.
