Care to Go Higher taster session delivered at Destinations Festival

Go Higher West Yorkshire (GHWY) delivered a taster of our Care to Go Higher CPD-certified course at the Destinations Festival at York St John University on Wednesday, 9 April.
The event was aimed at enabling young people from all backgrounds to learn more about their future educational and career paths. It was hosted by the Uni Connect programme for North Yorkshire, Inspiring Choices.
About Care to Go Higher
Our Care to Go Higher programme helps to equip those who support care-experienced young people – foster carers, children’s home staff, local authority staff – to understand the huge range of Higher Education (HE) options available locally, and also the significant amount of support that is on offer.
The Festival was a great opportunity to promote it via further networks, as well as obtain additional perspectives on its value from HE outreach. Our talk provided a taster of the content and useful resources for framing discussions with young people about their futures.
The next iteration of the course will be delivered by Rob Scott, our new Training Delivery Officer. He is currently recruiting for two new cohorts: one starting at the end of April and the second taking place from the start of June. Please help us spread the word by promoting the course across your own networks.
Destinations Festival
A wonderful range of groups and organisations attended the Festival as stall holders, including HE outreach teams and employers with work experience schemes for disadvantaged young people. There were also two volunteers from Quilts For Care Leavers, who make quilts so that young people transitioning out of the care system have something comforting to take with them.
In addition, there were talks throughout the day, such as Student Finance, and a crime scene as part of a taster session on policing.
Tahera Mayat, our Collaborative Outreach Officer, was able to see first-hand how beneficial GHWY’s transition pack resources are to young people, through a positive conversation with a young person about their future education. This includes a newly launched Transition Pack for Care-Experienced Learners to help transition to HE, created by GHWY in collaboration with Inspiring Choices.
We were fortunate enough to make some valuable connections with people and groups who share our collective passion for helping disadvantaged young people. These have helped us to lay the groundwork for potential future collaboration with other groups helping disadvantaged young people across Yorkshire and beyond.
GHWY Network to support care-experienced and estranged students
The GHWY network brings together staff from across our 13 member institutions to understand the experiences of care-experienced and estranged students in getting access to and succeeding in HE. We have some flagship activity, including our Transition Pack, and also support our local authorities with their own offer to care-experienced young people, on behalf of GHWY members.
