De Lacy Academy students enjoy workshop with University of Leeds Fellow

A University of Leeds Fellow visited De Lacy Academy this term to deliver a workshop to top set classes from Years 9, 10 and 11. Organised with the Leeds University Outreach Team, the session was based on engineering design and the geometric calculations required when measuring the scoliotic curve.

A total of 81 students took part, engaging in a session that both inspired students and stretched their capabilities. Activities included calculating spinal curve severity from an X-ray and decided on the appropriate course of medical action for the patient.

Students learned about studying maths at a higher level, in particular the application of maths in engineering and medical settings, and also how advances in technology  enable medical practitioners to make 100% accurate calculations.

Students were fully immersed in this informative and interactive workshop which introduced them to the Cobb angle, which is used by orthopaedic professionals to measure the severity of a scoliotic curve.

The learning outcomes covered the enhancement of maths skills but also encompassed Science, Technology, HE and LMS, along with giving students the opportunity for strengthening team work and confidence skills.

All students said they had really enjoyed the session and the maths staff were very inspired by this bespoke and very worthwhile workshop. Beverley Davis-Clegg, Higher Education Progression Officer at De Lacy Academy, said that she felt the workshop was “a great example of outreach at its best.”
