Elliott Hudson College: Operating Theatre Live

On Wednesday the 15th January 2020, Elliott Hudson College welcomed back Operating Theatre Live – an interactive masterclass that allows students to develop their anatomical knowledge, take part in live dissection and gain an insight into different careers within healthcare. This event was aimed at Year 12 students studying Biology or Medical Science, and allowed students to hear from medical professionals about the routes into careers within healthcare, as well as the skills needed to succeed such as communication, mental maths and teamwork. Students received a lot of in-depth information about anatomy, infection and disease, and then worked in groups to put their knowledge into action! This involved preparing a patient for surgery (including measuring anaesthetic) as well as dissecting organs from a pig specimen to understand how they work. This was a one-off and truly immersive experience, one that will be brilliant to reflect upon when applying for university courses, apprenticeships or jobs in the future!

Student Feedback was overwhelmingly positive:

100% of the students that took part agreed that the event challenged them and taught them new anatomical knowledge

95% of the students that took part agreed that Operating Theatre Live helped them to reflect on what they would like to do as a career.

86% of the students that took part agreed that the event taught them new information about careers in medicine and healthcare.

100% of the students that took part would recommend this event!

The students also had great things to say about the event. “I loved how we were taught all knowledge of the body then left to explore the knowledge through the practical,” one student commented. “I learned so much about the body.” Another considered the event’s usefulness when considering future career options, saying, “This was an amazing & interesting experience which has helped me reflect on my future career.”
