Go Higher West Yorkshire welcomed children and young people who are currently in care to three fun workshops at Bankfield Museum in Halifax last month, exploring themes around law, crime and justice.

Tying in with the Museum’s Horrible Halifax exhibition, the Foster Family Fun Day: Law and Justice was designed to encourage 5-16 year olds, from across West Yorkshire, to think about some of the jobs they can do when they grow up. It also gave them a taste of some of the amazing things they can study at college and university to help them get there.

The children and young people discovered facts about crime and punishment in Victorian times during a workshop run by the Museum. This was followed by a present day law education taster provided by the University of Bradford, within which they were asked to consider, among other things, modern criminal law and aims of the criminal justice service. They also designed a themed T-shirt during an art and design workshop provided by Calderdale College.

The interactive event, which was also attended by accompanying foster carers, supported young people to complete a think-book to help them reflect on what they had discovered. Staff and students
