Foster Family Fun Day inspired by children’s author Michael Morpurgo
Looked after children and young people enjoyed two interactive workshops that gave them the opportunity to explore what their future could hold at Go Higher West Yorkshire’s recent Foster Family Fun Day.
The event, which was held at Leeds City Museum on Tuesday, 20 February, aimed to encourage 5-16 year olds who are currently in care to find out more about higher education and to consider some of the jobs they can do when they grow up.
Starting with a tour of the Museum’s latest exhibition, Michael Morpurgo: A Lifetime in Stories, they then participated in workshops that were inspired by themes in the work of the well-loved children’s author.
Attendees from across West Yorkshire got creative at Leeds Arts University’s animal shadow puppet workshop, and found out more about life beneath the water by examining creepy crawlies under microscopes during a session that was run by the University of Huddersfield.
Throughout the day HE professionals and student ambassadors from Leeds Beckett University and Leeds Arts University were on hand to help out and answer any questions about studying in higher education.
The fun event, which was also attended by accompanying foster carers and residential staff, supported young people to complete a think-book to help them reflect on what they had discovered.
It is the latest activity to demonstrate the ongoing commitment to care leavers shown by Go Higher West Yorkshire’s Higher Education providers, having recently updated its partnership-wide Care Leaver Covenant for 2018-19.
