Leeds West Academy students attend Graduation ceremony
On Friday 9th February, Mr Senior and Miss Collins accompanied 8 of our Year 12 students to The Brilliant Club Scholars Programme graduation ceremony at the University of Leeds. At the event, the students had the opportunity to ask current undergraduates from a range of subject areas any burning questions that they may have about university life. The students were also given the opportunity to reflect on their time on the Scholars Programme, considering how they can use their new skills in the future.
After a tour of the campus, we were treated to a key note lecture from Daria Sharmarina titled ‘Vaccine Wars’, which explored the history of vaccines and their effect on the body in protecting against viruses and diseases.
Over the past 3 months, the students have been working with Tamsyn Fraser – a PhD student studying zooarchaeology at the University of Sheffield. Tamsyn said that “The students of Leeds West Academy have been an absolute credit to their school. They have worked extremely hard and have all excelled in a subject area that they were previously unfamiliar with. Tutorials with them have been an absolute pleasure and I have enjoyed hearing their original and thought-provoking ideas. I am seriously impressed with the standard of work that they have produced and think that they should be incredibly proud of this achievement. I wish them every success in their future studies and have no doubt that they will all achieve their goals”.
