Some place a greater emphasis on practical learning, while others focus more heavily on research or independent study. Understanding these differences can help students find a course that suits the way they learn best. 

Another useful question is whether the course offers opportunities such as work placements, internships or studying abroad. These experiences can help students develop valuable skills, build confidence and make connections with employers, all while enhancing their university experience. 

It’s also worth asking about teaching styles and facilities. Will learning take place through lectures, seminars or practical sessions? Are there specialist laboratories, studios or equipment available? Visiting an open day or speaking to current students can often provide valuable insight into what studying the course is really like. 

Students should also think about where their chosen subject could lead. Asking about career opportunities can help them understand the range of roles their degree could open up. While some subjects naturally lead towards specific professions, many develop transferable skills that are valued across a wide variety of careers. 

Finally, it is important to check entry requirements. Understanding which subjects and grades are needed can help students identify suitable options and, if applying through Clearing, focus on courses where they are most likely to be eligible.
