St Wilfrid’s: Autumn 2017 Roundup

Students in the sixth form at St Wilfrid’s have been busy preparing their UCAS applications for university this term and have received some great offers already from universities up and down the country. One student, who in September was convinced he would stay living at home, has now received an unconditional offer for Petroleum Engineering at Plymouth University and is going to put it as his firm choice, which is great news. The student changed his mind about going to universities further away after receiving an explanation of the student loans system, which reassured his parents that he would in fact be able to afford to move away from home.

A small group of sixth formers visited Leeds Trinity for a ‘Sports at University’ taster and talk from ex-Leeds Rhinos player Jamie Peacock, some of whom have now gone on to apply to study Sports Science at the university in September.

In December we welcomed Ahead Partnership into the school to provide a Careers Panel event for Year 11 students. This involved seven professionals from various business areas taking part in a Q&A session about their careers, qualifications and giving advice to our young people about entering the world of work. Students gained some really useful tips from the event and were able to relate well to the panel.

We are also taking 28 Year 11 students to BPP University Law School in the last week of term to learn about the different job roles and study paths within Law, as well as take part in a mock trial with wigs and gowns included! Hopefully this will inspire some of our future solicitors and barristers.

There are lots more events planned for 2018 including a residential and university campus visits, so watch this space!
