Students graduate from collaborative residential summer school
Ninety students from ten schools and colleges across West Yorkshire enjoyed a programme of activities that was designed to provide an immersive Higher Education (HE) experience.
The young people attended Go Higher West Yorkshire’s ‘Class of 2025’ Collaborative Summer School, which was held between 16-17 July 2019.
The residential followed the student journey from registration to graduation and included a glimpse into academic subject tasters, student-led societies, and an enterprise challenge with Dragons’ Den style elevator pitches.
It culminated in a graduation ceremony at Bradford College, to which parents and carers were also invited. They were joined by GHWY and NCOP managers Helen Sykes and Alice Taylor, as well as Mick Chandsoor from Bradford Council.
Activities during the event spanned five HE partner institutions: Bradford College, University of Bradford, Leeds Arts University, Leeds Beckett University, and Leeds City College. Participants were supported throughout by dedicated Student Ambassadors from across the consortium as well as core staff and academics.
The students and accompanying school staff praised the event, which gave them a better understanding of the HE landscape in the UK. Immediate feedback also indicated that it had improved their grasp of the paths they could follow to achieve their ambitions and career choices.
The residential was funded by Go Higher West Yorkshire – a partnership of 13 HE providers in West Yorkshire, committed to encouraging under-represented groups to aspire, apply, enter and succeed in HE – and the government’s National Collaborative Outreach Programme (NCOP) – which aims to increase the number of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds in Higher Education by 2020.
