What is Clearing – and how can it help you find the right course?

Let’s be honest – not everything goes to plan. Maybe your exams didn’t go as well as you’d hoped. Maybe the idea of moving miles away doesn’t feel quite right anymore. Or maybe you’ve only just decided that university is actually something you do want to do.

Whatever your situation, Clearing is here to give you another shot. This is a way for you to find the perfect course, and the place, that fits where you’re at right now.

What is Clearing?

Clearing is part of the UCAS university application process – think of it as a “last call” for filling course spaces. It’s the perfect opportunity for you to take control of your future.

You’re eligible for Clearing if you:

  • Didn’t receive any offers;
  • Didn’t meet the conditions of your offers;
  • Declined your offers;
  • Applied after 30 June; or
  • Are applying for the first time

In short, it’s a second chance – and a valuable one too.

When does Clearing happen?

Clearing officially opens from Saturday, 5 July until mid-October, but the big rush happens after A Level and BTEC Results Day on Thursday, 14 August. This is when universities confirm who’s been accepted, and many spaces free up for new applicants.

Top tip? Don’t leave it too late. The earlier you apply, the more choice you’ll have.

How to apply to a University Centre through Clearing

If you’re considering a Higher Education course at a University Centre, the Clearing process can look a little different compared to larger universities.

University Centres are based within colleges and offer degree-level qualifications such as HNDs, HNCs, foundation degrees and full BA Honours, often in partnership with awarding universities. They tend to offer smaller class sizes, a more personalised learning environment and flexible study options – which can be especially appealing to local students, mature learners or those balancing study with work and/or family.

Ready to apply?

Unlike traditional universities, where you typically apply and accept places through UCAS, many University Centres offer direct entry through Clearing. This means:

  • You can often apply directly to the college via their website or admissions team
  • Decisions are usually made quickly

It’s a good idea to check individual University Centre websites to see what courses are still available, and contact their admissions team – they’re happy to talk through your options and guide you through the process.

Whether you’re continuing your education straight after college or returning later in life, these centres offer a supportive environment and practical courses that can help you progress towards your career goals.
