Year 9 students from Cockburn John Charles Academy cook up a storm!
When: 06/03/2019, 12:00 – 14:45
Where: Leeds City College- Printworks Campus- International Kitchen
NCOP facilitated Year 9 Food Technology students attending Leeds City College for an engaging and hands on Hospitality and Catering Curriculum Taster Session. The students arrived at the busy LCC Printworks campus (which was also hosting a careers fair!) and were immediately able to experience the buzz of a busy FE campus. After learning what was on offer to study at LCC and the routes into study, the students were treated to an interactive campus tour, seeing behind the scenes of many of the practical and vocational courses at LCC. The students saw cars being sprayed in the Vehicle and Motor Repair department and then hopped straight into the cabin of a plane to see how prospective air stewards train to become cabin crew. With a stop off at the Salon to see the work of the Hair Dressing, Beauty and Media Make-up department, the students ended up in the working restaurant, The Printworks Kitchen and Bar, which is open to the public, to get a taste of where they might end up should they pursue a career in hospitality and catering,
The students then headed into the International Kitchen to do some fast paced learning and cooking with Chef Shaun. After debating the right way to cut an onion, the students whipped up a delicious stir fry in the heat of a professional standard kitchen and impressed with their knowledge of preparation, health and safety and technical skills.
The students found the day informative and engaging and were pleased to be taking the finished result away to eat on the way home and knowledge of what their next steps after school could be.
