Mohamed Ibesh

“I’m a former student of the Leeds College of Building, currently studying Architecture, Art & Design at the University of Huddersfield. I initially began attending college once a week during year 10, which was part of a skills academy. I soon began conversing with the staff at College and received an immense amount of support; this pushed me to pass my GCSEs to ensure I would be given a place at the college to study my dream course.

Although I was extremely nervous about starting College the tutors and staff were all extremely welcoming and put me instantly at ease. The support I received during my time at Leeds College of Building was incredible and is what really pushed me to pursue the career and course I had always wanted to study- Architecture. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities I have had with the College as I truly never imagined myself to be in the position I am today.

I came to the UK at the age of 12, with nothing but hope; I did not know a word of English, but I knew I had a purpose. Studying at Leeds College of Building made it possible. I gained enough confidence to go on placements, attend interviews, find a job, and be accepted onto my dream course. Of course, many obstacles were in my way; however, with the help of my tutors I was able to review different routes and pathways to lead me to my goals. I am proud that I am currently studying my dream course and aim to progress towards becoming an architect.

So far, I have found my time at University extremely enjoyable. This is mainly due to the preparation I was given by the tutors at College which ensured I was ready to study at University level. I feel more prepared than many on my course as what I studied at College links so well with our modules. Whilst studying at the college I was also introduced to auto cad, which I am currently using for my projects; the preparation and support I was given for this application has ensured I am completing these projects at the highest standard possible. Overall, I am extremely grateful for the opportunities Leeds college of building allowed me and where it has led me; I hope to progress further and become a well skilled architect.”
