GHWY’s collaborative Stand Alone Pledge updated for 2023-24
Go Higher West Yorkshire (GHWY) has updated its collaborative Stand Alone Pledge, which is aimed at students studying without family support, for 2023-24.
The resource, which was first produced in 2021, raises awareness of the support available for estranged students across our 13 Higher Education (HE) member institutions. This includes whether they have named contacts, dedicated webpages, and additional financial support.
This year’s document revises the support categories that our members offer. It now includes new check-boxes for experiences on campus, application support, contextual admissions (when a provider considers an individual’s personal circumstances when making admissions decisions), and support with the transition to HE.
The document also features a definition of care-experienced, a glossary of HE terms, quotes from estranged students, and a list of top tips to help individuals on their HE journey.
The resource will be officially launched with a social media campaign during Estranged Students Solidarity Week (27 November – 1 December). The theme for this year’s campaign, which is run by Stand Alone charity, is identifying estranged students at different points of their student journey.
It will also be shared with our members, key stakeholders and Local Authorities across the region.

The e-resource is part of GHWY’s wider activities to improve estranged students’ access to, success in, and progression from HE. This includes our free e-learning to help HE staff support care-experienced and estranged students.
