In the latest of our ongoing programme of HE outreach for looked after children, Go Higher West Yorkshire (GHWY) welcomed foster families to the University of Bradford on 14 March to informally explore an environmentally-conscious study and career path.   

Focusing on the design and production of renewable energy, academics from within the University’s mechanical engineering department wowed children with a tour of lab facilities and student-built prototypes. Children were introduced to life as an engineering student and told about the different pathways available to become an engineer. 

Foster families were also joined by students from the universities of Bradford and Leeds Trinity, who answered pre-planned and audience questions about their journey to higher education and their experience as a student. The panel included one student who was herself care experienced. 

GHWY has an ongoing commitment to collaborative working in the interest of care experienced young people. Engagement opportunities such as this event, which reach young people from across West Yorkshire, are a vital part of that commitment. We are redesigning our approach to events like this in the future, while retaining the informal, family friendly essence that has worked well for many years.
