The more information you can provide about a new environment, the better this is for disabled students in HE. This may include signposting to information or advocating for this if it does not exist.
Environment information that you may want to share with your students includes:
- Physical accessibility: including step free route, refuge points, disabled parking/toilets
- Student support/help: such as where/who to go for help with finance, mental health
- Directions or clear signage helps to guide students (not just disabled students)
- ‘Open door’ policy: when are office hours? Are you happy for people to knock?
- Displaying building opening times allows disabled students / all students to work at a time that best suits them on a given day
