Empowering staff: practical tips for student-facing staff

The support that staff can offer disabled students includes, but is not limited to, the following: 

  • Allow students to attend a different seminar time to the one that they have been allocated 
  • Providing resources in another format or making slight changes e.g. use off-white instead of white paper
  • Giving extensions to students who need it for anything that does not require official approval 
  • Be clear about what support looks like e.g. what are office hours, proofreading support 
  • Proactively signpost to support services (e.g. mental health) available at your HE provider  
  • Record sessions (if your HE provider does not do this) and make slides available beforehand
